SELF BUILD - DRAWINGS AND CASTINGS
Maxitrak through Maidstone Engineering Supplies now offer three locos from its range for construction by the home Model Engineer.
These models have proved popular with kit construction customers for many years, and are now available exclusively and for the first time in a mix and mach format for the homebuilder.
Every part is available in the traditional "un-machined casting" style, but also as a fully machined item for those without the appropriate equipment to complete the machining.

A brief history and introduction is provided for each model.
1" Scale "BURRELL" Traction Engine
The Maxitrak 1" scale Burrell engine is the first accurate true scale model in this size available to the model engineer as "drawings and castings".
The prototype engine is an eight nominal horse power agricultural engine built in 1915, works number 3728, registration number NO 806, was measured and photographed and the model drawn up for kit construction in 1996. The result is a well-detailed and popular engine, which has been built in kit form in hundreds since its introduction by Maxitrak.
There are several different versions of the engine to choose from, gas or coal fired, agricultural, road or showman's.
The Road engine is based on the same parts as the agricultural engine but has a disc flywheel and motion covers etc (these fitted not to scare horses on the road!). The Showman's road locomotive has all the items as fitted to the Road engine and in addition is equipped with a dynamo, full length canopy on twisted brass supports and brass rings and stars on the flywheel and belly tanks. A range of accessories is available to suit all the engines, including scale buckets, shovels, hosepipes and road lights. A living van and ride on low loader trailer are available to complement these engines.
All of the Burrell range of engines can be built with either gas or coal firing. The gas-fired engine has a refillable gas tank in the tender. This will run the engine for about forty minutes of hard work on one fill. The coal-fired engine has a crankshaft driven pump with a tank and bypass valve in the tender. Both versions have a separate hand-pump.
The drawing set comprises of the general arrangement and front elevation drawings, 200 individual component drawings in A4 format and a complete kit build manual to help with assembly painting, driving, etc.

5" Gauge "WARSHIP" Electric Locomotive
This model faithfully follows the distinctive "Warship" outline and will comfortably haul the driver and 6passengers. Features include twin motors, with 24volt electronic control, tooth belt drive, twin tone horns, and illuminated route indicator boards. The full length fibre-glass body provides scope for super detailing, with chassis and bogie to match. Window frame castings are all available for detailing the cab ends. As are lamp brackets, handrails, pipe work and couplers. Name, shed and makers plates of your choice can also be ordered, along with their appropriate BR logos to enhance this popular model.
5" Gauge "RUBY" Steam Locomotive
Ruby was the first Maxitrak steam locomotive, being a freelance model based on normal British narrow gauge practice.
This loco is one of the easiest, if not the easiest, 5" live steam engine available in drawings and castings form. As such it is an ideal engine for the first time builder or those who are more experienced but wish to get an engine finished in a short time. The Marshall valve gear has few parts and does not need any die blocks or curved links. The boiler is of the circular firebox marine type, being easily built without using Oxyacetylene equipment. There are few castings employed, most items being made from stock material. It can be built with or without a tender and will make into a delightful narrow gauge engine full of character, as proved by the many engines to have been completed over the last twenty odd years.
